The Netherlands has more than 35,000 km of cycle paths and one of the safest cycling networks in the world, the national long-distance LF route network links cities and landscapes with its own signage, almost always separated from motor traffic. This is our pick of especially relaxed routes to explore on your e-bike.
Each route's path is calculated when the page loads over the real road network (an OpenStreetMap routing engine), it's indicative, not the exact track from a cycling app. For turn-by-turn navigation use the "Full route on Google Maps" link on each card, or a cycling planner like Komoot or Fietsersbond.
EasyWaterland, north of Amsterdam
Amsterdam – Volendam – Marken
The classic ride from Amsterdam, past polders and farms to the fishing villages of Volendam and Marken, almost entirely on segregated cycle paths.
38 km approx. 2.5–3 h
Why it's safe: Its own cycle path for almost the whole route, very little motor traffic and completely flat terrain. Note: due to roadworks at the Julianaweg, the cycle path at Volendam's entrance (Kathammerzeedijk) is temporarily out, follow the signposted detour via the cycle path past the sports fields.
Along the dike beside the river Lek, from the famous Kinderdijk windmills (UNESCO World Heritage) to Rotterdam, with water views the whole way.
26 km approx. 2 h
Why it's safe: A cycle path on the dike itself, wide and separated from traffic, with almost no crossings. Note: until end of September 2026, around 100 m of the path near West Kinderdijk is temporarily closed on weekdays 9am–3pm for cable works, a signposted detour over the dike road is in place.
Forests, heathland and inland dunes within the park itself, between the Otterlo entrance and the Kröller-Müller Museum; inside the park you can use the free white bicycles. Note: an entry ticket is required, even for cyclists (around €13-14 per adult).
15 km approx. 1–1.5 h
Why it's safe: The park's internal cycle network is closed to private motor traffic.
As close as the Netherlands gets to "mountains": through the Heuvelland hills, past the famous Cauberg climb (Amstel Gold Race), half-timbered villages and the mainland's highest point near the Vaalserberg.
41 km approx. 3–4 h
Why it's safe: Quiet, well-signposted country roads with little through traffic, the challenge here is the hills, not the traffic. An e-bike genuinely helps here.
The iconic 32 km-long Afsluitdijk between the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea, dead straight, with open water on both sides as far as you can see.
32 km approx. 2–2.5 h (incl. cycle bus)
Why it's safe: Note before you go: the cycle path isn't continuous yet. At the Den Oever and Kornwerderzand locks you currently still need to take the free cycle bus (construction work, due to finish late 2026/2027), plan around that, and ignore any 100+ km detour a route planner suggests if it doesn't know about the cycle bus.
Forest and heathland with genuine rolling terrain (rare for the Netherlands), with the Posbank as a viewpoint over the purple heather, especially popular in September–October.
14 km approx. 1–1.5 h
Why it's safe: Cycle paths separated from the road through the forest, and since July 2026 the roads around the Posbank are partly closed to cars and motorbikes, even quieter cycling than before.
